How high off the ground should the rabbit cage be?
Rabbits do not prefer to stay much high from the ground. They often stand on their hind legs and examine the environment outside. So the cage should give the creature this opportunity and it should allow the rabbit to introspect the area outside its cage.
The head of the rabbit should not touch the ceiling of the cage; neither the ears of the creature should be stuck within the walls. The rabbit cage should be placed at a height of 2 inches from the ground when you are bringing home baby bunnies, but for the matured ones you need to keep the shelter at least at 3 inches in height.
Why are rabbit hutches raised above the ground?
The base of the rabbit hutch is kept at a height to prevent the creature inside to get wet from the floor. Sometimes the floor below the cage of the rabbit gets wet due to urination or water leakage from the cage. If the cage is set on the ground then this humidity will affect the rabbit and when the cage would be locked the rabbit would not be able to come out when it will be on the wet floor.
Also when you keep the cage on the floor the creature may be harmed by ants or various other insects that come crawling on the floor. These pests may get attracted by food particles or any other thing that gets leaked from the cage and these can attack the rabbit if it is on the floor.
So you should better keep the cage of the rabbit at a good height. But the height should not be too high as that would be risky for the rabbits.
Which is the best position for the rabbit cage in your house?
You should always place your rabbit cage inside your house. Do not make mistake and keep it outside as that would be harmful to the rabbit. They cannot withstand living alone and thus your family’s presence is important to them.
Make sure that the cage is placed in such a place where you can see the rabbit and the rabbit can see you. Unless you are allowing it to enjoy your company you would not be able to keep the rabbit safe and healthy.
Make sure to keep the cage off the floor so if your floor gets dirty it does not affect the health of your rabbit. Keep some lining on the floor of the cage so the dirt does not come out and create a mess on the ground beneath.
Does a rabbit cage need a bottom?
Some owners are confused about keeping the bottom of the rabbit cage and when they keep the cage in a high place. Wire bottoms are the common things found at the bottom of the cage of the rabbits. The ones made with ones are usually the same in their bottom, but often it gives chance to the dust, hay pieces, and even feces to get through the wires and fall on the floor below. Thus you need to keep the place free from mess and use something to layer the bottom of the cage.
What can you put on the floor of the rabbit cage?
You can keep a paper towel or even better a sheet of old newspaper which can be recycled in this way. The paper material soaks the humidity and thus it will keep the water or liquid so the pet rabbit can stay healthy and dry.
Humidity is not safe for the rabbits and this is one of the reasons the pets are kept above the ground in their cage. If you keep the pets in a slightly raised place then it would be necessary for you to keep something on the floor of the cage. This way you will be able to avoid the dirt and mess gathering at the bottom of the floor.
Does the uplifted cage help the rabbits to stay healthy?
The uplifted cage makes the life of the rabbit much easy. They do not get the chance to stay in dirt which makes them free from various kinds of bacteria and pests. When the cages are placed on the floor the coldness and humidity from the floor attack the rabbits and they often fall sick.
If you have placed the cage of your pet rabbit at a good height then it will help them to stay clean and also the urine which may leak from their cage bottom will not soil the body of the pet rabbits.
Can you keep the cage of the pet rabbit on a shelf?
You should not keep the rabbit cage at a good height as rabbits do not like to stay in an uplifted position. Just keep some space between the floor and the cage bottom but keeping the shelf at a good height would make the pet rabbit anxious. They are not accustomed to living at a good height as they by nature stay close to the earth.
Also when you keep the cage of the rabbit at a good height, the rabbit can fall off the cage as they love to jump inside the cage. They are quite restless in nature and do not stay in one place calmly for long. Keeping the cage elevated would risk its life.
When they would not be able to see the surroundings and feel the vibe of its atmosphere it would feel solitary and that would affect their mental as well as physical health. This way you would be harming its well-being. So keep the shelter of your pet rabbit at a moderate height from where it can take part in the life going around it and also can be free from the humidity and mess.
