Make your Leopard gecko used to your presence

It is seen that since we humans are bigger than the leopard geckos therefore they see us as predators and might get scared with our presence. If you move towards your pet too fast it might get scared and hide. Also, they might even attack on you if they find your hand in the low.

To avoid such conditions you should just place your hand on the floor and wait for your leopard gecko to explore on its own. You can do it on a daily basis also or for some time. When your gecko will learn that your hand is not a threat for it, it will feel comfortable around you and more relaxed with your presence.

If your leopard gecko licks you, you should not be afraid with that, this is their way to sense their surroundings.

Once you feel that your pet is comfortable with your presence and is not scared with your hand, you can lift your hand and hold your pet.

How to tame your leopard gecko?

In this guide we will see the various steps that will help you know for how you can tame your let easily.

If you are having a leopard gecko then at some point of time you have to handle your pet, bit you have to do so without making them scared. So it is very important that you make your pet get used to your presence so that you can handle it very easily.

So read the various steps that are mentioned below which will help you to know about the handling ways.

Place your hand in tank

Now when you are placing your hand in the tank you need to make sure that that you remove all the things which your pet can use for hiding purpose. So this will leave no pace for them to hide. You shouldn’t be surprised if they run on seeing your hand for the first time. The first step to begin with the taming will be for sure placing your hand in the tank. This should be for about 5-15 minutes at one time.

For some first days it will not walk on your hand, but slowly it will get used to it and seeing no harm it will walk onto it. Also, they will try to lick you. This is not something you should be worried about. So after they walk onto your hand you should pick them slowly. Do this for about 2 weeks.

Take every step slowly so that it is nice for your pet and it does not stress it as well. So the first thing is to keep your hand in the tank. You should keep one thing in mind while you are placing your hand in the tank. You should not place it so low that it can catch or bite you. Do not place the tank at some place where a lot of people are around or there is noise.

Tame Your Leopard Gecko

If you feel that your leopard gecko is still scared then you should not move to the next step.

It will take some time but it will happen for sure. Also, you should know that a the Leopard geckos do not tame at the same rate some might even take a lot of time. Some might even take only 1-2 days or some may take 4-6 months too.

Pick your leopard gecko

The next step after placing hand in the tank is to pick up your gecko. If you see that your pet is dropping the tail then you should know that it is getting scared. Also, your pet might get scared if you immediately pick them up. So let it crawl on your hand a little and when it is comfortable on your hand then pick it up.

Also, if you hold them then try not to squeeze it and hold it gently. They do have very delicate bodies so if you hold them very tight it can harm them.

So, in the beginning which is first two weeks you should only hold your leopard gecko above the cage. So, if you accidentally drop it then it will be easier for you. Also, your pet feels safe when it is tamed around the natural habitat.

Hand taming

Once you feel that your leopard gecko is comfortable with you then you can try picking it up which makes it more comfortable. So, let your pet move around from your hand to hand. Do this fir about 5-10 minutes. At first it will move very fast from kne hand to the other.

Take your gecko out of the cage

The last step would be to take your gecko out of the cage or their habitat. So, it means that the above steps are very important before you do this one.

Bring your pet to your living room, bed and anywhere where you feel it can crawl around easily.  Also, it should be safe so that if it gets under something then you can easily find it.

  • When you take your pet out, take care that it is not left alone. Make sure you are present.
  • Also, do not place them anywhere from where they can fall or get injured. They do not fear height.
  • Make sure you keep them away from the stereos and from noise.
  • Also make sure the other pets are away.

how to handle the leopard geckos?

Prefer buying the leopard gecko at a young stage. This is because the young ones are fragile and delicate too. Thy can be handled easily by you. So if you have a young leopard gecko then you can begin the handling early as they will get used to it.

Also, you will develop an early bond with your pet and improve the understanding between them. Along with this you will find that you will be able to provide good care if you develop a good bond with your pet. This is because you will know about its sickness and when it needs a bath and all that stuff.

Now, when you have brought the gecko home you need to give it time. You should not be surprised to see your pet hiding at the start, this is because it feels scared to be in the new surroundings.

Do not force your pet to like your presence, this is because it will get scared or stressed. This is not good and you should give your Leopard gecko some time to adapt to the conditions.

You should be aware of the fact that the Leopard geckos are mostly active during the night. So if they do not respond to you in the day it is completely normal. If your pet hides a lot it is just because it is new and will take time to adjust to the surroundings.

They might even refuse to eat the food you offer during the start as it takes time to adjust the new surroundings you have brought it to. You should not panic if it skips first few meals after you bring it home. But if it does not eat for weeks then you should probably take it to a vet.

Conclusion

Generally we see that the Leopard geckos are not so fond of handling. But if your leopard gecko gets used to you then it will find handling well.

You need to handle your pet slowly and gently. This id necessary because it can stop trusting you at any point if it feels scared. Also, handle it only when it is 3-4 months old. This is because the little ones are fragile and you will get stressed.
