Why is my leopard gecko so small?

There could be many reasons related to the small size of the leopard gecko that one should know about and a few of them are listed below:

1. Bullied by other geckos

The leopard gecko is not growing and is small in size as compared to the average size of the leopard gecko. As we know that we cannot house many geckos inside one enclosure especially if they are not of similar size as the bigger leopard geckos can stress them and also not more than one leopard gecko should be kept in the same tank because they are territorial in nature and because of this reason they can get aggressive and can attack each other.

The bigger leopard gecko will not let the smaller one do anything and will dominate them in every way possible.

In this manner, the smaller leopard gecko will not grow and because of the bullying going inside the enclosure, they will not be able to get proper nutrition as they are just eating the leftovers of the bigger ones and also drinking the water if it is left in the bowl or is just surviving on the water droplets formed due to misting in the tank.

This will surely lead to stressing of the leopard gecko and that is why they will not be able to grow properly in size and will remain small in size.

2. Improper Nutrition

The leopard gecko is not growing and is quite small in size one of the major reason is that it is not getting proper nutrition and the reason behind it can be many like the unhealthy diet, the leopard gecko is not feeding properly and also the supplements that you are providing to the leopard gecko is wrong.

These are various reasons that the leopard gecko is not growing and is too small because it is not getting proper nutrition. They are not getting the proper type of food that is healthy for them and which will provide them with all sorts of nutrition.

When there is not proper feeding of food which means you are not feeding them with what is right for them and also the leopard gecko is not being fed on a regular basis then also they do not grow as they will not get proper nutrition.

Even when the wrong supplements are provided to the leopard gecko then also they do not grow or feel healthy it just does not help them in any way and because of this they still remain small and there is no improvement in their size and appears to be small as compared to other leopard geckos.

3. Stressed leopard gecko

When the leopard gecko is stressed that also hinders the growth and they remain smaller in size which is actually not a case. There could be many situations in which the leopard gecko have to face lots of stress and because of this, they are not able to grow.

If the leopard gecko is too stressed they can drop off their tail and in order to repair that part all the nutrition goes there and that is why they appear to be small and there is stagnation in their growth. So in this case the leopard gecko cannot grow if they are not free from any sort of stress.

4. Leopard gecko is sick

If the leopard gecko is sick it clearly indicates that the leopard gecko will not be able to grow properly and this will hinder their growth, because they do not eat much when they are not well. If they will not eat properly they will not have any sort of growth and they will appear to be smaller than usual.

You need to be sure about the reason for sickness only then you would be able to treat them and give them the right type of treatment. The leopard gecko because they are sick will not be able to grow and will appear to be smaller.

5. Unfavourable environmental conditions

When the environmental conditions are not favourable for the leopard gecko their growth stops and they tend to appear smaller than those who are having favourable environmental conditions.

The conditions like dehydration, cold temperature, not proper humidity will definitely hinder the growth of the leopard gecko as they will not be able to dwell properly in these conditions and that is why they will not be happy and even will not enjoy their stay inside the captivity.

They will not feel comfortable and all this will stress them which will further lead to the sickness of the leopard gecko and they will not eat. All these things will sum up to one thing that the leopard gecko will not be able to grow and will be quite small.

Leopard Gecko So Small

What can you do to overcome their small size?

You can take various steps in order to help your leopard gecko to grow properly and be bigger in size and some of these steps are listed below:

  • Try not to keep many leopard geckoes especially of different sizes and the same gender in one enclosure.
  • Feed the healthy diet to the leopard gecko and that also on regular basis.
  • If you are not able to rectify the problem that the best option is to visit the vet and make sure proper treatment is given on time.
  • Do not give any sort of stress to the leopard gecko as the stress has an adverse effect on the health of the leopard gecko.
  • Provide them with everything that is necessary for the leopard gecko to live a healthy life including the favourable conditions of living.

Conclusion:

The leopard gecko needs your care, love and support so that you can see them happy and healthy and also so that they can grow properly in captivity and do not just remain small.

Their small size is definitely a problem and also a reason to get concerned about them. So let your leopard gecko be as they want to and do not force anything on them.

You will also feel happy to see your leopard gecko is growing in a proper manner and is not having any sort of problem inside the captivity and you both should share a bonding with each other.
