Why some owners do not give blankets to the rabbit cage?
Rabbits have the gnawing habit and they try to chew anything that they get around them. The part of the blanket that they would bite off may get inside their stomach. The fabric is nothing that can be digested and thus, it can go inside their stomach and be there until it causes some digestive problem. You should take proper care and make sure that the rabbit does not bite off the blanket as that will later lead to severe health problems.
Why it is good for the rabbits to have blankets in their cage?
Rabbits love anything that is soft to feel and a blanket gives them that soft feeling in their cage. Thus they would love this feeling when they would get the blanket on the floor of their cage. Also, they lie on the rug of the living room and often they lie on the cushions as well.
So when you offer blankets to your rabbit it makes them happy and content. Just make sure that the material of the blanket is not toxic for the rabbit as it may get ingestion or digestive problem due to chewing that.
Which blankets should not be given to the rabbits?
When you use the blanket in the rabbit’s enclosure, make sure that the blanket is a new one. Do not use a threadbare old blanket for the cage of the rabbits as that will lead to various mishaps. Not only the threads will be chewed and swallowed by the rabbit and choke it eventually, but also the holes of the blanket can trap the paws of the rabbits. This way it will cause the rabbit much discomfort.
Also, make sure that the rabbit is not making large holes in the blanket that you give them. If you see them making large holes on the fabric and do not find the torn pieces around the cage then maybe the rodent has ingested it. This is a sign of alarm and you should remove the blanket for the cage altogether.
Is a blanket necessary for the rabbits?
Wild rabbits usually cope with the cold weather in the wilderness. They do not need any blankets when they are in the wild jungle. They can manage to stay alive and fit in the cold weather by living inside their burrow. They actually dig the burrow so that their body temperature does not decrease after a certain point and the place inside the burrow stays insulated.
So when it comes to arranging the blanket to keep the rabbit warm, it may not be very useful. Their body is covered with fur and inside the house, they will never experience the chilled weather as there would be some kind of heating system.
But if the system fails or if there is no such system in the house, then it can be freezing for the rabbits. They cannot take up much cold weather and they will not be able to dig burrows inside their cages. So arranging for a blanket can save them from such a situation and they can go under the blanket or wrap them around in the cold weather to keep them warm.
When should I give a blanket to my rabbit?
Rabbits love to become cozy and feel soft around them. But unless it is winter you should not give those warm blankets as it comes with chewing habits and ingestion of fabric. In the season of winter, the blanket becomes necessary. So you can give the blanket to your rodent pet but make sure that the pet is using it properly and not causing any harm to its health.
Should I cover the cage of the rabbit with a blanket?
Some owners actually cover their rabbit’s cage with a blanket at night, which is not a necessary action for the pets. Earlier people used to keep the cage of pets like rabbits outside the house and at night, due to the cold weather and also due to the presence of predators around the cage, they kept the cages covered. This is a justified action as the cold weather can be somehow prevented by covering the cage with a blanket at the top.
But now, when the cages are kept inside the house by most the pet owners, this is an unnecessary thing and you should not bother to cover the cage with blankets. Also, the reason for cold weather is not valid much as the room temperature inside the house remains mostly in control, so the rabbits do not freeze in cold anyway.
How the blanket can help a skittish rabbit?
When you have adopted a rabbit you do not know about its nature. Rabbits are usually friendly creatures but they can become skeptical and skittish as they have individualistic nature. The ones with such nature would not feel comfortable for the first few days in the new habitat.
In case you have other pets at home, you will not be able to keep the rabbit calm. It will become more nervous by the presence of other bigger-sized pets around it. At this point, the blanket may come in handy. You can just cover the top of the cage with a blanket so the rabbit does not get to see the bigger creatures. This way it will only be able to hear the voice and will be accustomed to the voice and sound first.
Also, the rabbits do not take many crowds, so if you have a house party, and the rabbit is supposed to be in the house, then covering it with a blanket will be a good idea. The pet will not be able to see the crowd and thus will not get agitated.
When the blanket should not be given to the rabbits?
Rabbits are unable to take hot weather. When there is summer going on, you should remove the blanket from the cage of the rabbit as it will cause unnecessary heat in the cage. This will not be suitable for the rabbits and they can get extremely hot. You can take off the blanket from the cage and do not place it until the cold season arrives.
Can I use a fleece blanket in the rabbit cage for bedding?
A fleece blanket is a good idea for the rabbit’s cage as this is a soft material and will give the rabbit ultimate comfort. You can provide the pet with a fleece blanket. But you must make sure that the rabbit is toilet trained and does not defecate in the blanket. Then it will get spoilt and you would have to change the blanket often. Washing the fleece blanket, again and again, may make it coarse.
Rabbits, in their old age, need something soft to support in their cage. If your pet has become senior then you must add a blanket, a fleece blanket if possible to the cage floor, and give the little creature some extra attention.
