Causes of sudden death in guinea pigs

There are lots of reasons for the fact that cause the sudden death in guinea pigs and as an owner you need to take proper care of them so that they can live a comfortable life and do not have to die so suddenly. Some of the reasons that cause sudden in the guinea pigs are listed below:-

1. Pneumonia

Pneumonia is one of the most common reasons and also an infection that will cause sudden death to the guinea pig. If you will not take proper care of them when they are infected by pneumonia. Pneumonia is very difficult to control when it spreads a lot and you will notice that they will face lots of issues sometimes cases go even worst and the guinea pig will die suddenly.

2. Infestation by parasites

The parasites are another reason which will cause sudden to the guinea pig and the main reason is that the parasites make the body of the guinea pig a host and they multiply on their skin which will lead to various infections and also health issues in the body of the guinea pig.

As parasites grow at a rapid speed and this will leads to various issues in their body and they will die suddenly. So infestation by parasites is very deadly for the guinea pig.

3. Diarrhea

Diarrhea also causes sudden death in the guinea pig and there are various reasons that cause diarrhea to the guinea pig. The guinea pig faces diarrhea because of something that they will eat in excess or something that is not right for them.

Also, another thing you will notice is that diarrhea would occur to the guinea pig because they are facing some kind of health issue or their stomach is not well.  If diarrhea occurs for a longer time span in your guinea pig, then the guinea pig will die suddenly if you will not take proper care of them.

4. Gut Stasis

Gut stasis occurs in the guinea pig when there is gas in their small intestines. In this case, the guinea pig will be fine, and maybe you will notice see any difference and they will eat like they normally do, but you will also notice after eating they will not pass the stool and this is something to worry about.

There are various reasons that cause Gut stasis to the guinea pig and you need to make sure that you know these reasons so that they do not face such an issue. Some of the reasons for occurring of Gut Stasis are changes in the environment, dental problems, improper diet, reactions to certain medicines, etc.

You need to look for these changes and then make sure that your guinea pig is not facing this issue because if you will not look after this problem then the guinea pig may die suddenly.

5. Dental problems

Dental problems are common problems that the guinea pig usually suffers and it becomes quite deadly if you ignore the problem. The dental problems can be like chewing issues, improper alignment, drooling problems, or some kind of infections, when these problems grow a lot then you will notice that the guinea pig will go through pain, weight loss, lots of discomforts, and even anorexia which will lead to the sudden death in your guinea pig.

6. Scurvy

This is another health issue that happens to the guinea pig and it occurs due to the deficiency of Vitamin C as the bodies of the guinea pig do not produce Vitamin C naturally and then they usually have a deficiency of Vitamin C in their body and which will lead to the scurvy in the guinea pig.

Due to the scurvy problem in the guinea pig, they will face issues like loss of appetite, limping, diarrhea, dental issues, and rough fur and in worst cases, it will lead to sudden death in the guinea pig. So you need to make sure that they do not get infected by scurvy because if you do not take care of the guinea pig at the early stage it can prove deadly for the guinea pig.

7. Urinary problems

The guinea pig also faces issues like urinary problems and the most common type of these problems is the development of stones in the kidney, bladder, or uterus of the guinea pig. This can cause a lot of pain and then the sudden death of the guinea pig. As there will be an accumulation of calcium and it forms a cyst that needs to be cured as fast as possible because otherwise, your guinea pig will die suddenly.

Also, you will notice that the guinea pig will face problems while urinating and they will not be comfortable with such issues. Also, there will be bloodstains in the urine of the guinea pig, in such situations you need to give them medical attention as soon as possible so that this problem is avoided otherwise you can even lose your guinea pig.

8. Cancers and tumors

As we know that cancers and tumors are deadly especially if detected at later stages so do look for these symptoms so that your guinea pig does not have to go through a lot of pain and also they do not have to die suddenly.

The tumors and cancer can be formed in any body part and it can cause lots of health issues in the guinea pig. In most cases, the guinea pig is not able to survive, and even if they do it is a very rare chance they will not be so healthy. So make sure that such conditions do not occur which can be so deadly for your guinea pig.

9. Toxicity due to antibiotics

There are chances that your guinea pig will not react properly to certain antibiotics and it will prove toxic for them, which is why you need to be careful with your guinea pig when you are giving them some sort of medication because they can react to any drug or salt present in it.

Also, you need to know this and avoid such antibiotics so that you can avoid the sudden death of the guinea pig because it is quite fatal for them. So make sure that the guinea pig is not given any antibiotic that they have a reaction to.

Also, their digestive system is sensitive and reacts quite fast to anything toxic and this will lead to sudden death in your guinea pig.

10. Heart attack and stroke

When the guinea pig goes through any type of stress or tension or maybe they are not living a comfortable life then it is very common to notice heart attack or stroke in your guinea pig which is why the guinea pig should be given a proper lifestyle so that they can live a comfortable life.

Also, we know that a heart attack or stroke can lead to sudden death in your guinea pig. So do not let such situations develop for your little pig and give them a life in which they will stay happy and stressed free most importantly.

These are some of the causes which will lead to the sudden death of your guinea pig and as an owner you need to know all of these so that they do not have to die suddenly and you can avoid their death. Make sure that the guinea pig is able to live a comfortable life because most of the problems occur because of the stress they are going through.
