For various dog breeds, haircutting at definite intervals is necessary. Some of them grow their hair so fast that the chance of getting clogged and matted becomes inevitable. But for the dog with double coats, there are certain preventions. Both the coats cannot be shaved at once as the growth of the coats will not be matched later.

Do you need to shave the coat of the French bulldog?

French bulldogs have a short coat and that should not be trimmed regularly. Only when the vet recommends shaving,  you can shave a part of it. The coat usually protects the body temperature of the dog and that is why you do not have to trim the coat.

Can you groom your French bulldog without a haircut?

French bulldogs need regular grooming sessions. It should be washed and shampooed once and often as they sweat a lot. Their chubbiness and wrinkles on their mouth as well as many other parts of the body make them stinky. But even if they get dirty, they cannot be shaved off.

They need to be bathed regularly and also their shampooing session cannot be delayed more than a month. But there is no way you could cut its hair from the body, as that will be harmful to its whole system.

Why you cannot cut the French bulldog’s hair?

There is no need for a haircut for the French bulldogs.  The basic reason behind this is, they do not grow the hair. The length of the hair does not increase and they remain short forever. So it is best to be left unbothered.

Another reason for not trimming its coat is, the coat usually protects the body temperature of the French bulldog. If you suddenly make it shorter, it will not be able to cope up with the outside temperature or coldness.

When do you need to shave the French bulldog?

The shaving of the French bulldog’s coat should be according to the vet’s suggestion. At times there appear rashes or skin problems like irritation and itching on the skin of the Frenchie. In some cases, the vet recommends the affected area to be shaved off and some ointment to be applied to the affected area.

Vets usually recommend shaving of the coat as and when the area needs proper treatment through the lotion or some antiseptic ointment. The fur may cover the skin and the medicine cannot work properly. So the area needs to be shaved before applying for the medicine.

Does the French bulldog grow its coat fully before it gets matured?

The French bulldog gets matured at the age of one year. Though a thin layer of fur is seen on their body from the time of their birth, their coat fully grows when they become at least 2 months of age. The shade and density of the hair remain intact once they are totally grown up.

Can you shave the coat of the French bulldog when it is shedding too much?

There are some misconceptions regarding the shedding of the French bulldog. Some owners think that as they have short fur on their coats, the shedding will be less. But the reality is, the shedding takes place regularly when there are certain seasons. At the time of growing up, the bulldog puppies tend to shed more than when they finally get matured. The fur on their body sheds after a certain time and new furs come up.

There is no need to shave off the bulldog as that will not help in reducing the shedding. Wait till the French bulldog gets matured and then the shedding will normally reduce. But shaving will only create problems for the dog and not help in the shedding anyway.

Can you solve the problem of stink by shaving the French bulldog?

Bulldogs do stink more than some other dog breeds. This is often astonishing for the dog owners as it seems that they have a thin coat of short hair on their bodies, so they are not supposed to stink much. But what happens is that they have a few wrinkles on their body and that is where the sweat gets trapped.

This problem needs a proper solution like regular grooming. Bathing with natural shampoo is needed to get the dog free from body odor. But there is no way you could shave off the dog’s coat. That may lead to some other serious problems but the stinking problem will not be solved this way.

How can you shave the hair of the French bulldog?

If and when the vet prescribes the shaving of the coat of your French bulldog, you have to be cautious and take necessary precautions while doing this. You may seek professional help, but if you are confident enough to manage this task on your own, then you are good to go, as confidence is the key when you are attempting anything new.

Get a pair of good-quality razors and dab them in water mixed with antiseptic lotion. This step is needed to make sure that if the skin is cut anyway, it will not cause any infection. The dog should be held by someone else when you will be concentrating on the shaving job. So get an assistant for this task that is friendly with the dog. Do not call someone whom the dog will be seeing for the first time, as that will make the dog freak out even more.

French bulldogs are usually calm-natured ones, and they do not get aggressive for any reason. They can be handled easily unless you are hurting it anyhow.  But to make the task easy, you can try to keep the dog distracted by offering it some treats. Use the treats while the job of shaving is done, as a reward for its patience.

Conclusion:

French bulldogs are cute, chubby, and very friendly-natured dogs that can make awesome pets. Get one and you will know the worth of the companionship that it has to offer. There are certain pros and cons of this dog breed and you have to take responsibility for its wellbeing, as its owner.

Do not attempt to do any experiment on it just because it depends on you for its life. Always take help and suggestion of a vet in case of any confusion.
