The hairballs are the balls of the hair as the name suggested and they are usually found in the digestive system of the rabbits which is why it is not dangerous for them. The Hairballs are also known as the Trichobezoars or the fur balls and these hairballs are a big threat to the rabbits because they are formed in the digestive system of the rabbits and there can be a blockage in their digestive system.

You need to make sure that your rabbit does not form any hairballs in their stomach because it can lead to lots of health issues in them. The hairballs are a common issue in rabbits because the hair enters their body when they lick their fur or sometimes they even ingest it if their body is lacking some kind of nutrient.

Also, the rabbits can accidentally ingest their hair or do it purposely depending on the various reasons. The hairballs are very dangerous for the rabbits and this is why we will discuss how to get rid of the hairball in the rabbits for their betterment.

How are hairballs formed in rabbits?

1. Lack of water

The water is very important for the rabbits and also it helps in keeping the rabbit hydrated because of which if the rabbits do not have proper water then if the hair will enter their digestive system it will not come out instead it will stick to their stomach or intestines forming hairballs in the rabbits as water would have helped in lubrication if they will drink it in sufficient amount.

2. Lack of fiber

The fiber is also very important in the diet of the rabbits which is why if the rabbits will not get enough fiber nutrient in their body then they will face issues that will lead to the hairball formation in their stomach and also makes the rabbit eat hair in order to overcome their dietary needs of the fiber. As we know that ingesting hair from rabbits is not at all a good thing because it will lead to hairball formation in their body.

3. Improper brushing

When you will not be able to groom the rabbits properly then you will notice lots of loose hair in their body and also the rabbits will ingest it when they will be licking it because we know that rabbits are known for grooming themselves and when they will do that they ingest lots of loose hair from their body which is because the owners are not able to brush their fur in a proper manner.

4. Obsessed with grooming

The rabbits get bored quite easily and due to this, they groom themselves a lot this lead to the obsession with grooming, and you rabbits are often seen grooming themselves. Due to this also lots of hair are being ingested by them because they are spending most of the time grooming their fur and this will eventually lead to the hairball formation in your rabbits.

The rabbits are sick or when they have problems in their digestive system the hair starts to accumulate in their body which would create lots of hairballs in their body which is why a sick rabbit is prone to hairballs in their digestive system.

How to get rid of hairballs in rabbits?

You need to make sure that you get rid of the hairballs in your rabbit as soon as possible so that your rabbit does not face any kind of health complications due to the hairballs formations some of the ways in which you can get rid of the hairballs in your rabbits are listed as below:-

1. Brushing properly

You need to brush your rabbit properly so that you can get rid of the unwanted lost hair because of this reason the rabbits will not be able to ingest this hair and you can get rid of this hairball problem in the rabbits.

2. Massage their stomach

You can even massage the stomach of your rabbit so that if there is any hairball in their stomach it can come out as massaging will help in removing any kind of obstruction in their digestive system. But make sure that you massage them gently and do not make it painful for them, they should be relaxed and calm at that time.

3. Provide pain relief

As the hairballs cause obstructions in the rabbit’s digestive system and because of this reason it can be very painful for the rabbits and that is why you need to give them the pain relievers like analgesics so that they can feel better and do not feel much pain because of the hairballs and this can even help in preventing the situation from going even more worst.

4. Enzyme tablets

The enzyme tablets are tablets that should be fed to the rabbits if they are facing hairball issues because these tablets help in breaking down the hairballs in the digestive system of the rabbits and in this way they can easily get rid of the hairballs without facing much hassle.

5. IV fluids

The IV fluids are also one way in which your rabbit can get rid of the hairballs. In this technique, the rabbits are rehydrated and also this will make them feel better and also these fluids will help in the movement of the hairballs in the body of the rabbits which is why it is an amazing technique to get rid of the hairballs and also it helps in providing fiber in the rabbits as lack of fiber in rabbit’s diet causes this problem in them.

6. Hairball removal surgery

Sometimes the situation is too bad and the hairball formed in their body is quite large and you cannot remove it from any of the above-mentioned ways then you need to do the surgery for your rabbit so that your rabbit can get rid of the hairball from their body.

7. Digestive stimulants

These are given to the rabbits so that if there is any blockage due to the hairball inside the rabbit’s stomach with the help of the digestive stimulant there can be a movement made inside their digestive system and in this way you can get rid of the hairball from their body.

8. Proper food and water

You also need to feed the rabbit with proper food and water so that no problems of hairball occur to them as lack of nutrients can lead to such things and even lack of water. So it is the duty of the owners of the rabbits they provide their rabbits with proper food and water as lack of fiber is one of the main reasons for the formation of hairballs in the rabbits.
