For some of the owners, pacman frog’s color changing is a vital issue. They worry when they see their frog becoming pale yellow as the pacman frogs are usually of much vibrant shade. Difference in the body color can be indication of bad health in general. But do you ever wonder which illness can be the cause of such color change?

Contents

Why the pacman frog is changing its color?

The primary reason of change of color can be the inadequate temperature. If the cage does not contain any heating system, or the heating system is not working properly then the frog will suffer from color loss. The perfect temperature for the pacman frog’s habitat should be 80 to 85 degree. When it is the night time the temperature may decrease to be 78 degree Fahrenheit but not less.

When you will fix the temperature and use a thermometer to measure the heat of the enclosure, you can be sure that your pet is getting right amount of heat and not feeling any illness.

What can be the effect of surroundings on the color change of the pacman frog?

It has been seen sometimes that the pacman frog is changing the body color when there is no difference in the temperature, humidity of substrate.  The surroundings can be the reason of their color change. If you have added a new plant or the background of the terrarium has been changed recently, then it can affect the mood of the pacman frog, which can be seen in the change of the color.

How the light can affect the color change of the pacman frog?

Though pacman frogs do not sleep at the night, yet they do not need the bright light at the night time. If you are thinking of keeping two different lights to fix in the terrarium of the pacman frog, then you should not do that. Keeping them in darkness will not do any harm to them as they are adjusted with the complete dark atmosphere, as they experience in the wild forest.

How natural light is helpful for maintaining the brightness of the color of the pacman frog?

There is no better option than the natural sunlight for the pacman frogs. But you cannot keep them in direct sunlight for 12 hours, as that can dry up the substrate and that will not be much helpful for them. They need moist substrate from which they will be able to grab the humidity and also they can breathe by their skin pores when they are resting burrowed in the substrate.

So if you are concerned about the skin color of the pacman frog and feel that it has lost the brightness of the color, then keep the terrarium in the sunlight for a few hours.

But make sure that it is during the morning or afternoon when the sun rays are not very harsh. 1-2 hours of direct sun bathing will be enough to provide them with the necessary UV rays and other rays absorption. They need shade as well to stay healthy as they mostly live under the shady trees in the forest.

Can the substrate be the reason of the color changing of the pacman frog?

The substrate of the pacman frog habitat should be cleaned off poops and also it should be often misted to keep it humid. If you are using some substrate that is not staying moist all the time, then it can be difficult for the pacman frog to stay healthy.

It has been earlier mentioned that the humidity as well as the oxidation of the pacman frog is acquired from the moist substrate. Items like coco fiber or the eco earth are right for the substrate option for the pacman frog’s terrarium.

If you are using sand or paper towel, then the moisture level will not be that high, and also paper towel is not the item that can be burrowed. So yes, choosing the right kind of substrate definitely matters when it comes to maintain the good health of the pacman frog and simultaneously it will keep the frog in best of its color.

How the water can affect the color of the pacman frog?

The pacman frogs need water in their terrarium for two purposes. It can be given in a shallow bowl for the bathing or dipping purpose, which is a favorite time pass for the pacman frogs. Also the interior of the terrarium as well as the substrate needs misting once or twice a day as the humidity level can be maintained by doing so.

You should use the clean fresh water for both the purposes. Some owners even claim to have misted the terrarium with ozonated water to make it more impactful. However, the dish water should be changed daily or at least once in two days, unless it will grow moss or other bacteria which will be in turn affecting the frog.

If the water misting and changing of water bowl is not done regularly, then the frog may suffer from the dehydration. As a result, it will lose the color of its body. So make sure to mist the interior often and provide the fresh water in the water dish.
