Pacman frogs are such adorable cute pets, but the owners know that every pet comes with its own lot of problems, that the owner has to face and deal with. For any pets, not eating regularly is a severe issue, as that may lead to certain illnesses and damage of health. So for the pacman owners, we would like to sort this problem by discussing the cause of this.

Contents

Reasons Your Pacman Frog Is Not Eating

There is a period fixed for the different species of pets, in which they can survive without eating. For the pacman frogs the time period differs with age and physique of each frog. Generally these frogs, when matured, can survive without food for a month. But this is not healthy and there can be various reasons behind the frog’s refusal to the food.

What kind of eater are pacman frogs?

Pacman frogs are voracious eater and they often act lazily, waiting for the food but not moving usually. So if you see that your pet frog is not moving from a single position then do not be panicked. It can be so that the frog is just enjoying its leisure and there is nothing to worry about the weakness due to the lack of food or food quality.

But generally pacman frogs are seen devouring the food as and when it is served. Thus refusing food signals something severe in their system.

Why the pacman frog stops eating?

If the frog is brought to the new place then it may not eat for a few days primarily. This is common for all the pets, or at least most of the pets. The new environment and company of new humans or creature makes then tensed and thus they lose the appetite.

However, this phase gets over within a few days and they feel accustomed with this new habitat. Thus they act normally and eat the regular amount of food when offered.

Why the pacman frog becomes skinny?

Pacman frogs are pretty chubby in feature, so if you find your pet is getting skinnier day by day, then you must search for the reasons.

Getting thinner can be caused by the wrong diet, most of the time. If you are not providing it with the right kind of insects, as this species of frog is mainly insectivorous, then it can lose weight.

Also there can be the monotony of the meal that makes them refuse the food and thus become thin. They are picky and fussy eater and often love some variety in their regular meal. If you only get them one kind of insects, like cricket, roaches or any other kind, then it will not have its food or may leave some of the food uneaten.

To change this situation, offer it variety of insects. Combine crickets with roaches and alternately give them some different insects. It will keep them attracted towards the food and they will stay healthy.

How many times should you feed the pacman frog?

Food should be offered to the pacman frog only once in two or three days. You must maintain the nutrient quotient of the food, and for that purpose you should add some minerals and vitamins in form of powder. The insects should be dusted with the vitamin dusts or you can gut load the insects before offering them to the pacman frog.

If the pacman frog opens its mouth frequently, does it mean it is hungry?

No, it is a common habit of the pacman frogs and it has nothing to do with the hunger. Many owners often get curious to know the reason behind such weird habits, but there is nothing alarming about this habit, as the frogs do that only by choice and not to express hunger or any emotion.

Can you feed dead crickets to your pacman frog?

Most of the owners face the issues of offering dead insects as the live insects are not always available to feed their pets. Pacman frogs are predators and the love to hunt the live insects when they are in their wild habitat.

So their basic instinct is to kill the insects and eat them. But when they are captivated, it is not always possible for the owners to get them live insects, and thus commercially available packaged insects are often served, and pacman frogs grab them.

But if you see that your pacman frog is not eating the dead crickets, then you can try to offer the live insects and see if the behavior of the pacman frog changes.

In which situations the pacman frog stops eating?

There are certain situations which can lead to the refusal of food by your pet frog. When it is hibernating or about to hibernate, it will stop eating for few days. You can check the weather and if it is cold outside, then there is nothing to worry about the frog’s starvation. May be it is getting prepared for the hibernating period and it will not eat for a few weeks onwards.

There is nothing to be panicked as at this time, the metabolism slows down and the pacman frog does not feel hungry at the period of hibernation or estivation. They get the minimum energy that they need to stay alive from the fat stored in their body. So they do not eat at this period.

Another time when you may see the pacman frog refusing its food is, shedding. Shedding is a natural process which is a part of growth system among frogs and many reptiles. Pacman frogs eat their own skin when shed and that is the reason they do not eat any external food during those few days. This is the process of using the materials of their shed skin to procure it inside their system.

What kind of diet should be offered if the pacman frog is not eating?

As we have mentioned earlier, offering variety in the meal will encourage the frog to eat in a better way. There are several items that you can offer to your pacman frog.  Crickets and roaches are the most popular insects to be fed to the pacman frog. But along with that you can also offer earthworm, butterworm and silkworm which will be tasty treat for the frog.

When you are seeing the frog to not eat the meal it was offered, you can try giving it a few of fatty worms like the silk worms. But do not make it a habit, as these worms contain high amount of fat and that is why these ones are so delicious. But regular feeding of such worms will fatten your pacman frog which may later lead to difficulties like bone disease and such other ailments.

Can you offer raw chicken to the pacman frog when it is starved?

Yes, chicken is a good source of protein and the bones can offer much needed calcium to your pet frog. Most of the frogs have welcomed chicken in their diet, but make sure to cut the chicken into small pieces. You can offer the small piece of bones but do not give them a chunky piece as that can choke them. chicken can be offered once in a week but do not replace it with the live insects as that should remain the main diet of the pacman frogs.
