Can my bearded dragon eat cantaloupe?

The answer is yes, the bearded dragon can definitely eat fruits but as we know that bearded dragon cannot eat all types of fruits because it is not good for them. Also the bearded dragon should not overfeed on cantaloupe because it is not good for them. So make sure that you control the cantaloupe consumption of the bearded dragon. You can feed cantaloupe to the bearded dragon but in a limited quantity and also not on regular basis but occasionally.

Cantaloupe should be fed as a treat

As discussed earlier that the cantaloupe should be fed as a treat to the bearded dragon and the reason is that bearded dragon does not need fruit in their diet on regular basis. Though vegetables is important for them but not fruits as such. This is one of the reason that why cantaloupe is fed as a treat to the bearded dragon. There are some fruits that they can eat frequently but cantaloupe is not one of them. So it tell us that the cantaloupe does not make a staple diet for the bearded dragon because of various health risks that it poses to the bearded dragon.

Some of the reasons that why the cantaloupe is not so good for the bearded dragon and is only fed as a treat to the bearded dragon has been listed as below:-

  1. High sugar content

The cantaloupe has sugar content in it that is not at all good for the bearded dragon and the bearded dragon is lover of sugar which means that they can overfeed on the cantaloupe which is not at all good for them. The bearded dragon do not need to have high content of sugar in their diet because it can be risky for the health of the bearded dragon  and lots of diseases can occur to them because of high levels of sugar in their diet.

  1. Causes Over- hydration

The bearded dragon can become overhydrated if they have lots of cantaloupe in their diet. As too much water in their diet will prevent the nutrients from being absorbed in the blood stream of the bearded dragon that causes lots of health issues in the bearded dragon. As nutrients will not be observed by the body of the bearded dragon they will start becoming weak and unhealthy. Also due to over- hydration it causes diarrhoea to the bearded dragon and this further leads to the dehydration in the bearded dragon’s body. Also other health issues are caused due to this over- hydration.

  1. Calcium to Phosphorous ratio is not good

The Calcium to Phosphorous is not good in cantaloupe for the bearded dragon, so do not overfeed the bearded dragon with cantaloupe. The Calcium: Phosphorous is 1:1.5 which means phosphorous content is more and that is not good for the bearded dragon. Also phosphorous prevents the calcium absorption in the body of the bearded dragon which leads to the metabolic bone disease in them.

These are some of the reasons that why the cantaloupe is fed as a treat to the bearded dragon and not as a staple diet. So you should only feed cantaloupe as a treat once or twice a month to the bearded dragon and too much of cantaloupe can be dangerous for the bearded dragon. The bearded dragon do love cantaloupe because of sugar content it has so you can add it with vegetables or green so that the bearded dragon can vegetable with it.

Final thoughts:-

The bearded dragon is known to be a good but a sensitive pet, so you should take care of them so that you can provide them with bets of everything.

The bearded dragon should be fed carefully so that nothing can hurt them and not all foods are good for them. Make sure you understand your bearded dragon so that they can build a strong bonding with you.

Also the bearded dragon is a great pet if you provide them with everything that they need and also that is important for them. The bearded dragon needs time with you but they do not want any sort of disturbance from anyone because they are solitary in nature.
