How to Calm Down an Iguana?

Iguana belongs to the family of lizard but they are herbivorous in nature. They are basically found in the tropical areas of Central America, Mexico, South America and the Caribbean. They belong to the class of reptiles and many people also keep them as a pet.

They are among the largest lizards that are found in America and have a large sized tails that constitutes to the half of the length of the iguana.

Why iguanas get aggressive?

There are times when your iguana will be quite aggressive when you will bring them home or put them in a new surroundings. So the owners should not worry they should understand their behaviour and calm them down.

This is quite normal behaviour that you will see in an iguana. Sometimes the iguana feels nervous and intimidated by the new surrounding that is why they become aggressive and also not easy to handle.

Another reason why they are aggressive is when their mating period comes at that time also they become quite aggressive.

How can you calm down the iguana?

The following steps need to be followed in order to calm down your iguana:-

Be patient

Try to be patient with your iguana and understand their behaviour, as once you will understand the behaviour of an iguana it will be easier for you to handle them. You have to build a routine for feeding, handling and cleaning so that they become comfortable with this routine and you can easily calm them down.

Be gentle

While handling or approaching your iguana be gentle. Try to hold them from side rather than from the above side as they will feel more comfortable this way. If your iguana is aggressive postures or it tries to scramble the body try to be patient with it and keep them down gently if needed. Do not force yourself on them.

Talk to your iguana in soft and gentle voice

Try talking to your iguana in soft and gentle voice. Do this as a routine task as it will make your iguana comfortable in your presence and they will calm themselves whenever they will hear your voice.

You have to spend time with your iguana and talk to them and also keep a name for your iguana so that they respond to it. Talking to the iguanas will help you vibe better with your iguana and will also help in calming them down.

Iguana-Handling

Never grab an iguana from their tail

There are times when your iguana is very aggressive so try to handle it carefully and do not put them down until they are calm, as iguana will understand from this until they are not calm, you will not put them down. So then they have to calm themselves to get down. Also be sure never ever grab an iguana from their tail as this will make them more aggressive because tail is their defence mechanism.

Make sure that the surroundings are safe

Whenever you are letting your iguana outside the cage you have to make sure that the surroundings are safe for them and there should not be any type of blockage on their way as this makes the iguana quite irritated and they will starts becoming aggressive.

Keep them away from the items

Keep them away from the items that can break as it can hurt the iguana. If the room to escape is safe and free from blockages it will keep your iguana calm and composed and will not run away and you will not have to work hard to capture them again in the cage.

There are times there is change in the behaviour of the iguana when they are around the strangers as they are not comfortable if any stranger handles them. This makes them anxious and stressed so try avoiding such situations in order to keep your iguana calm and also you will be able to manage them properly.

You need to take in charge of everything then only your iguana can build trust on you and will be able to bond with you.
