Why is my crested gecko hiding?
The crested gecko can hide due to various reasons and one should be aware of that reason because then only proper measures would be taken if some serious issues are there. The reasons for the hiding of the crested gecko are as follows:
1. Hiding of crested gecko is a normal behaviour
The hiding of a crested gecko is normal behaviour because they love to hide when they want to sleep or take a rest. From this behaviour, you will know that it is important to add items for hiding in the tank of the crested gecko like the caves, plants, hide boxes, etc.
They also love to spend most of their time of the day in hiding and have made various spots inside the tank where they live. Also, you will notice some crested gecko will hide at higher places in the hanging plants or somewhere in the leaves.
Sometimes crested geckos will move out of their hiding place you will not be able to see them and because of this misunderstanding, you think that they are hiding. When you are rarely seeing your crested gecko so it is better to leave fresh water and food for them so that they are not left hungry or thirsty. Even you need to try to look for them and spot them carefully inside the tank so that they are not lost and you know where to find them when they are hiding inside the captivity.
2. Crested gecko is stressed
When the crested gecko is stressed then also they prefer to hide and do not want to come out of their hiding. They are not at all happy inside the tank as something is stressing them out and they do not like to come out of their hiding and even if everything is provided to them inside their tank still they are not interested to come out.
As a responsible owner, you need to understand their problem that why they are stressing out and what you can do to release their stress and overcome their problems inside their captivity. You need to find out what they are actually dealing with. Check they are too lethargic and are inactive and is in their hiding most of the time, this clearly means that they are going through some sort of stress and they do not want to do anything.
3. Crested gecko is ill
When your crested gecko is not well and having some sort of injury, infection, disease, egg binding, etc. this also leads to the hiding of the crested gecko. They do not feel comfortable coming out of their hiding and want to stay at one place and also they have become lethargic and they do not feel like eating, even if food is just in front of them.

4. Humidity is low

So it is recommended to keep the humidity of the tank at 50% to 60% during day time and at 70% to 90% during the night time. So your duty is to provide the proper humidity inside the tank of the crested gecko so that they do not have to hide most of the time because of the low humidity inside their tank. You can do misting, use moisture-retaining substrate so that you can maintain the correct levels of humidity inside the captivity of the crested gecko.
5. Lighting is wrong
When the lighting inside the tank of the crested gecko is not right and we know that the crested geckos are crepuscular which means they are active at night. If you will keep the bright light during the night time they will feel that it is light outside and it is not time to go out and this will definitely disrupt their cycle of activity.
So you should be knowing what type of lighting should be provided inside the tank of the crested gecko. Also, the tank should be placed in such a place where it is dark so that it is not in direct contact with the lights of the room. So try to keep less light when it is dark so that the crested gecko’s activity cycle is not disturbed, otherwise they will be hiding most of the time.
6. Problems with the tank
Do check that if there is any sort of problem with the tank because that can also make your crested gecko hide for most of the time if they are not comfortable inside the tank and are not enjoying their time.
Check for the problems like temperature change, humidity level, proper lighting, heat, etc. Look for the issue and try to fix it as fast as possible. So that they do not have to hide most of the time inside their tank.
