Akita is a large-sized dog that is known for guarding the house and protecting the seniors from strangers. They love to play and also they are pretty much obedient when it comes to following orders. There are pretty many reasons to adopt Akita but this one is not on the top of the list of dogs that are adopted.

Their aggressive nature is often visible through their attacks towards unknown dogs. They do not get friendly with even the same-sex dogs of their own species. This way you can call them unsocial but they have many social behavioral streaks in them. The family in which they are brought up is much close to their heart and they do take care of their family in their own way.

Is Akita a dangerous dog?

This breed of dog looks much fluffy and playful, but the breed actually has its origin from the wolves. Their attacking style and situation often cause death and accidents. Till 2014 70 attacks have been caused by this breed of dog and nearly 8 deaths have been noted. So looking at this behavior many owners get afraid and they think Akita is not the kind of dog to be kept as a pet at home.

Which places have banned adopting Akita?

In many cities of the US, Akita is banned. They have been marked as aggressive and when they interact with strangers or other dogs in the vicinity, there can be accidents due to the attacking nature of Akita.

Which dogs can be beaten or defeated by Akita?

Akitas are pretty aggressive and they are also much large in size. They can beat or defeat most of the dog breeds. When it comes to bears, they do not beat the large bears, but the hunting ability and sharp observation help them hunt and attack any animal near them or their territory.

Wild bears are not easy to hunt down, so Akitas cannot kill them. But when it comes to smaller dog breeds like pitbull, which is also famous for their aggressive and destructive nature, it gets defeated by Akitas.

Do Akitas bite their owners?

Akitas are much trustworthy and loyal to their owners. They are kept from an early age to guard the property and self of humans. They are much dutiful and manage to stay with the human family of their owners. But when they are not properly trained, or brought to a new place or a new owner’s home, it can attack or try to bite their owner.

Are Akitas good with babies?

Akitas are guard dogs and they are much helpful when it comes to protecting the seniors at home. But when it comes to babies, they are not much fond of the small humans. This does not solely depend upon the matter that they are large and big-bodied, but their nature and temperament are not suitable for staying with the babies.

The headstrongness in Akitas makes them short-tempered. So they are unable to handle the rush or rumbling of the small babies that run around the house or try to play with the dog in their own way. The Akitas do not find it funny when the babies come close to them or pull their tails or ears. They are not easygoing in a matter of touching their body frequently. So it can cause them irritation, which is why they are not supposed to be kept with babies without the presence of an adult.

However, they can be trained to be sociable and social dogs. There are certain tricks that, if taught from an early age, can make Akitas a well-behaved dog that will love the presence of babies and other family members in the same house.

Can you leave the Akita alone in the home?

Till now, we have depicted Akitas as one of the bold and strong dog breeds. But there is another side of the coin too. When they are brought to the foster home at a very young age, and trained properly, they can become very attached to their owner and the family. Though this self-willed dog prefers to follow its own rule and likes to stay aloof most of the time, they are unable to stay alone in a home for long hours.

So does that mean being the owner of an Akita makes you all-time busy and you cannot go out on your own?  Well, not exactly. You can accommodate the dog to stay alone in the room with some toy to keep it busy for some time. Also, you need to practice it for a few days beforehand, so it does not get startled once it finds itself alone in the house.

How can you leave the Akita alone at home?

Make sure to feed it well so it does not feel hungry, which can trigger its aggression. You must maintain the time limit within which you will not feel hungry after one meal.

The time span of leaving the Akita alone should not be more than four hours. This time limit is enough to make the Akita nervous and anxious, which will make it act aggressively when you come back.

Put some soft toy or any game that can keep the Akita busy for some time. As long it stays busy with the game, it will not mind your absence.

Do not leave the Akita alone with kids or other small pets at the home. This can be dangerous. However friendly the dog may seem or however habituated it may have become with your baby or other pets like turtle, snake, or lizards, leaving it alone with the Akita at home can lead to awake the hunting streak in the dog.  You would not wish to witness some gory scene when you come back anyway.

Why the Akitas sometimes growl at their owner?

Growling is not always a sign of threatening. Also, it can be an expression of pain. When you touch the Akita and it mildly growls, then it may seem that it is suffering from some pain. Also, this is a sign that you should not touch it as it may next time bite you.
